So, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the pots should be overturned. Then he distributed, deeming ten sheep equal to one camel. One of the camels fled, and the people ran after it till they were exhausted. There were only a few horses with them. A man, thus, threw an arrow at the camel, and Allah caused it to stop. Then he said: "These animals have instincts like those of the wild beasts, so if you lose control over one of them, treat it in this way." It is sustenance that Allah brought out for you. Do you have anything from its meat with you, so that you would feed us? We sent some of its meat to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) which he ate
Abu ‘Abdullāh Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched us to intercept a caravan belonging to Quraysh, and he appointed Abu ‘Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) as our commander. He gave us a sack of dates as provision, other than which he did not find anything for us. Abu ‘Ubaydah used to give us one date at a time. He was asked: “What did you use to do with it?” He said: “We used to suck it just as a baby suckles, then we would drink some water after it, which would suffice us for a day until the night. We also used to beat off tree leaves with our sticks, then soak them in water and eat them.” He continued: “We then headed towards the sea coast, where something like a huge mound appeared to us. When we came to it, we found that it was an animal called 'Al-‘Anbar' (sperm whale). Abu ‘Ubaydah said: "It is a dead animal." Then he said: "No, rather we are the messengers of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and we have gone out in the cause of Allah. Now you are forced by necessity, so you can eat." We kept on eating from it for a month until we fattened up, and we were three hundred men. And indeed, I saw how we scooped out fat from the cavity of its eye in pitchers, then we would cut pieces from it like a bull or the size of a bull. Abu ‘Ubaydah took thirteen men from us and seated them in the cavity of its eye. He took one of its ribs and fixed it up, then saddled the largest camel of ours and it passed under it (the rib). We took large pieces of its meat as provision for our journey back home. When we arrived at Madīnah, we came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned all of that to him. Thereupon, he said: "It is sustenance that Allah brought out for you. Do you have anything from its meat with you, so that you would feed us?" So he said: "When you let loose your trained dog (after a game) and you mention the name of Allah, then eat what it catches for you." Then I said: "Even if they (the dogs) kill it (the game)?" He said: "Even if they kill it, so long as no other dog, which is not one of them, participates with them." I said: "What if I throw a blunt edged spear at the game and I hit it?" He said: "If you strike it and it pierces it, then eat from it; but if it strikes the game with the blunt end, then do not eat it." The Hadīth narrated by Ash-Sha‘bi from ‘Adiyy is similar but it mentions: "...except if the dog eats from it, then do not eat it, for I am worried that the dog caught it for itself. If other dogs mix with yours, then do not eat from it; because you only mentioned Allah's name when sending your dog, not the other dogs." It also mentions: "If you send your trained dog, then mention Allah's name. If he catches it (the game) alive, then slaughter it, but if it is killed and the dog does not eat from it, then eat from it; because when the dog catches it, it is similar to slaughtering." It also mentions: "Mention the name of Allah when you shoot your arrow." It also mentions: "If the game disappeared a day or two (two or three in another narration), and you found the trace of your arrow only, then eat from it as you like. But if you found it drowned in water, do not eat from it; because you do not know if it died from the water or your arrow.”

So I mentioned the story to Sawdah and said to her: "When he visits you, he will come near you, whereupon you should say to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, have you eaten Maghafīr (bad-smelling gum)?' He will say: 'No.' Then say to him: 'What about this smell then?' It was very hard on the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) that a bad smell would emit from him. He will say: 'Hafsah has given me a drink of honey.' Then say to him: 'Its bees must have sucked from ‘Urfut (a foul-smelling plant).' I too will tell him the same. And you, O Safiyyah, also say the same.’ When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sawdah, the following happened, as related by Sawdah, who said: 'By the One other than Whom there is no god, I was about to tell him what you had told me while he was still at the door, out of fear from you.’ But when the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came near her, she said to him: ‘O Messenger of Allah, have you eaten Maghāfīr?’ He replied: ‘No.’ ‘I said: 'What about this smell then?'
