“There are four (traits); whoever has them is a sheer hypocrite, and whoever has one trait of them has one of the traits of hypocrisy until he gives it up: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is in a dispute, he behaves in a shameless immoral manner
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are four things; whoever has them is a hypocrite, and if one has a trait of them, he has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he quarrels, he acts immorally; and when he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous."
Shall I inform you of the gravest of the major sins?
Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I inform you of the gravest of the major sins?" He repeated this three times. They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Associating partners with Allah and undutifulness to parents." He was reclining and then sat up and said: "And indeed, the false statement." He repeated it so many times that we wished he would stop.
The major sins are associating partners with Allah, undutifulness to parents, murder, and intentional false oath
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The major sins are associating partners with Allah, undutifulness to parents, murder, and intentional false oath."
“Avoid the seven destructive sins
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Avoid the seven destructive sins” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He said: “Associating partners with Allah; magic (sorcery); killing a person whose killing Allah has prohibited except by legal right; consuming usury; devouring the property of an orphan; fleeing from the battlefield; and slandering chaste, innocent, and believing women.”
When two Muslims meet to fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the killed are doomed to Hellfire
Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When two Muslims meet to fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the killed are doomed to Hellfire." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, that is the case with the killer, but what about the killed one?" He said: "Indeed, he was keen to kill his companion."
Verily, the example of the righteous companion and the evil companion is like that of the carrier of the musk and the blower of the bellows
Abu Mūsa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, the example of the righteous companion and the evil companion is like that of the carrier of the musk and the blower of the bellows. The carrier of the musk will either give you, or you will buy from him, or you will get a pleasant smell from him, and the blower of the bellows will either burn your clothes or you will get an offensive smell."
No soul gets killed wrongfully without the first son of Adam taking guilt for its blood because he was the first to institute the practice of murder
‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No soul gets killed wrongfully without the first son of Adam taking guilt for its blood because he was the first to institute the practice of murder."
All of my Ummah may be forgiven except those who commit sin openly
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "All of my Ummah may be forgiven except those who commit sin openly. One kind of committing sin openly is when one commits something during the night, then the morning comes and Allah has screened it, but he says: 'O So-and-so, last night, I did such-and-such.' Though he spent the night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin), in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself."
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the foremost deed that leads people to Paradise, and he replied: Fear of Allah and good character. Then, he was asked about the most things that lead people into Hellfire, and he said: The tongue and the private parts
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the foremost deed that leads people to Paradise, and he replied: "Fear of Allah and good character." Shall I tell you what ‘ada is? It is calumny which is committed among the people
Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I tell you what '‘ada' is? It is calumny which is committed among the people."
The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan."

O Messenger of Allah, what if a man comes to me wanting to take my money?
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what if a man comes to me wanting to take my money? He said: "Then do not give him your money." The man said: What if he fights with me? He said: "Then fight with him." The man said: What if he kills me? He said: "Then, you would be a martyr." The man said: What if I kill him? He said: "He would be in Hellfire."
When I was taken on an ascent to heaven, I passed by a group of people (in Hellfire) with copper nails scratching their faces and chests
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I was taken on an ascent to heaven, I passed by a group of people (in Hellfire) with copper nails scratching their faces and chests. I asked: O Gabriel, who are these? He replied: These are the ones who eat the flesh of people (by backbiting) and slander them."
There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them, and they will incur a painful punishment
Salmān al-Fārisi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them, and they will incur a painful punishment: an aged person who commits adultery, a poor person who is arrogant, and a man whom Allah has given a commodity, yet he does not sell except by swearing an oath, nor buy except by swearing an oath."
When Allah wants to punish a people, the punishment befalls whoever is among them, then they will be resurrected according to their deeds
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When Allah wants to punish a people, the punishment befalls whoever is among them, then they will be resurrected according to their deeds.”
The most rebellious of people against Allah, Exalted and Glorified, is someone who kills another in the sacred precincts of Allah
‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb reported from his father, who reported from his grandfather: The most rebellious of people against Allah, Exalted and Glorified, is someone who kills another in the sacred precincts of Allah; kills someone other than his killer; or someone kills someone out of a pre-Islamic animosity.
May Allah curse the thief who steals an egg and his hand is cut off for that, and he steals a rope and his hand is cut off for that
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah curse the thief who steals an egg and his hand is cut off for that, and he steals a rope and his hand is cut off for that."
إن الله عز وجل لم يهلك قومًا فيجعل لهم نسلًا
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ: اللهُمَّ مَتِّعْنِي بِزَوْجِي رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَبِأَبِي أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، وَبِأَخِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّكِ سَأَلْتِ اللهَ لِآجَالٍ مَضْرُوبَةٍ، وَآثَارٍ مَوْطُوءَةٍ، وَأَرْزَاقٍ مَقْسُومَةٍ، لَا يُعَجِّلُ شَيْئًا مِنْهَا قَبْلَ حِلِّهِ، وَلَا يُؤَخِّرُ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا بَعْدَ حِلِّهِ، وَلَوْ سَأَلْتِ اللهَ أَنْ يُعَافِيَكِ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِي النَّارِ، وَعَذَابٍ فِي الْقَبْرِ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَكِ» قَالَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ الْقِرَدَةُ وَالْخَنَازِيرُ، هِيَ مِمَّا مُسِخَ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَمْ يُهْلِكْ قَوْمًا، أَوْ يُعَذِّبْ قَوْمًا، فَيَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ نَسْلًا، وَإِنَّ الْقِرَدَةَ وَالْخَنَازِيرَ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ».
ما من ذنب أجدر أن يعجِّل الله لصاحبه العقوبة في الدنيا مع ما يدخر له في الآخرة من البغي وقطيعة الرحم
عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا مِنْ ذَنْبٍ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ يُعَجِّلَ اللَّهُ لِصَاحِبِهِ العُقُوبَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعَ مَا يَدَّخِرُ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنَ البَغْيِ وَقَطِيعَةِ الرَّحِمِ».
خمس إذا ابتليتم بهن، وأعوذ بالله أن تدركوهن
أقبل علينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: "يا معشر المهاجرين، خمس إذا ابتليتم بهن، وأعوذ بالله أن تدركوهن: لم تظهر الفاحشة في قوم قط حتى يعلنوا بها، إلا فشا فيهم الطاعون والأوجاع التي لم تكن مضت في أسلافهم الذين مضوا. ولم ينقصوا المكيال والميزان، إلا أُخذوا بالسِّنين وشدة المؤونة وجور السلطان عليهم. ولم يَمنعوا زكاة أموالهم إلا مُنعوا القطر من السماء، ولولا البهائم لم يمطروا. ولم ينقضوا عهد الله وعهد رسوله، إلا سلط الله عليهم عدوا من غيرهم، فأخذوا بعض ما في أيديهم. وما لم تحكم أئمتهم بكتاب الله ويتخيروا مما أنزل الله إلا جعل الله بأسهم بينهم".
Among those who were before you, there was a man who had an injury. He was impatient, so he took a knife and made a cut in his hand and bled to death. Allah Almighty said: My slave hastened to bring about his demise; I have forbidden Paradise for him
Al-Hasan reported: Jundab ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us in this mosque, and we have not forgotten since he narrated to us, nor do we fear that Jundub would have lied about the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among those who were before you, there was a man who had an injury. He was impatient, so he took a knife and made a cut in his hand and bled to death. Allah Almighty said: My slave hastened to bring about his demise; I have forbidden Paradise for him."
Whoever throws himself from a mountain and kills himself will be in Hellfire, falling down into it and abiding therein eternally forever
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever throws himself from a mountain and kills himself will be in Hellfire, falling down into it and abiding therein eternally forever; whoever drinks poison and kills himself will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in Hellfire, wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will be carrying his piece of iron in his hand and stabbing his abdomen with it in Hellfire wherein he will abide eternally forever."
Beware of insignificant sins
Sahl ibn Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of insignificant sins, for indeed, an example of insignificant sins is like a group of people who alighted at the bottom of a valley: one of them brought a stick, and another brought a stick, until they cooked their bread. Verily, insignificant sins, if one is held accountable for them, they perish him."
