Do not seek knowledge in order to show off in front of the scholars, or to argue with the foolish;
Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not seek knowledge in order to show off in front of the scholars, or to argue with the foolish; or to get the higher status in gatherings. Whoever does that, the Fire, the Fire."
If you see those who follow the ambiguous verses, they are those whom Allah has named; so, beware of them
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {It is He Who has sent down to you the Book. In it are definite verses, which are the foundation of the Book, while others are ambiguous. Those with deviant hearts follow the ambiguous verses, seeking discord and seeking their [false] interpretation. But no one knows their [true] interpretation except Allah. And those who are well-grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it. It is all from our Lord." None will take heed except people of understanding} [Surat Āl ‘Imrān: 7]. Then, he said: "If you see those who follow the ambiguous verses, they are those whom Allah has named; so, beware of them."
A man will go to sleep and honesty will be taken out of his heart and only a trace of it will remain, like the trace of a dark spot. And a man will go to sleep again and the honesty will decrease further still, so its trace will resemble that of a blister.
Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told us two Hadīths. I have seen one fulfilled, and I am waiting for the other. He told us: "A man will go to sleep and honesty will be taken out of his heart and only a trace of it will remain, like the trace of a dark spot. And a man will go to sleep again and the honesty will decrease further still, so its trace will resemble that of a blister, as when an ember is dropped on one's foot and makes it swell. One would see it swollen but there would be nothing inside it." He took a small stone and rolled it on his leg. He then continued: "People will be carrying out their trades, but there will hardly be a trustworthy person. It will be said: 'In such-and-such tribe there is an honest man.' And later it will be said about some man: 'What a wise, polite, and strong man he is,' even though he will not even have faith equal to a mustard seed in his heart." No doubt, there was a time when I did not mind dealing with any of you, because if he was a Muslim, his Islam would compel him to pay me what is due to me, and if he was a Christian, the Muslim official would compel him to pay me what is due to me, but today I will only deal with this person and that person from you.
The first to be judged on the Day of Judgment is a man who was martyred. He will be brought and Allah will remind him of His favor [upon him], which he will recognize. Allah will say: What did you do as a token of gratitude for that favor? He will say: I fought for Your sake until I was martyred
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The first to be judged on the Day of Judgment is a man who was martyred. He will be brought and Allah will remind him of His favor [upon him], which he will recognize. Allah will say: 'What did you do as a token of gratitude for that favor?' He will say: 'I fought for Your sake until I was martyred.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. You fought so it would be said that you were brave, and it was said.' It will be commanded that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown in the Fire. A man who acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought and Allah will remind him of His favor [upon him], which he will recognize. Allah will say: 'What did you do as a token of gratitude for that favor?' He will say: 'I acquired knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Qur'an for Your sake.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. You learned so it would be said that you were a scholar, and you recited the Qur'an so it would be said that you were a reciter, and that was said.' It will be commanded that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown in the Fire. A man for whom Allah expanded his resources and gave him from all types of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will remind him of His favor [upon him], which he will recognize. Allah will say: 'What did you do as a token of gratitude for that favor?' He will say: 'I left no path wherein You love to spend except that I spent therein for Your sake.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. You did that so it would be said that you were generous, and that was said.' It will be commanded that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown in the Fire."
Verily, what I fear for you is a man who recites the Qur’an until its brightness appears on him and he becomes a support of Islam. (This continues) until this man changes his state to what Allah wills. He detaches himself from it and throws it behind his back. Then he starts attacking his neighbor with the sword, accusing him of polytheism
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, what I fear for you is a man who recites the Qur’an until its brightness appears on him and he becomes a support of Islam. (This continues) until this man changes his state to what Allah wills. He detaches himself from it and throws it behind his back. Then he starts attacking his neighbor with the sword, accusing him of polytheism." I asked: "O Prophet, which of the two deserves more to be described as a polytheist? The accused or the accuser?" He replied: "The accuser."
