Verily, the reward of deeds depends on intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what he intended
The Commander of the Believers, Abu Hafs ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Verily, the reward of deeds depends on intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what he intended. So, he whose emigration is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and he whose emigration is to achieve some worldly gain or take some woman in marriage, his migration will be for what he has migrated for."
Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your heart, and you dislike that people know about it
An-Nawwās ibn Sim‘ān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your heart, and you dislike that people know about it." Wābisah ibn Ma‘bad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he said: "You have come to inquire about righteousness and sin." I said: Yes. He said: "Ask your heart. Righteousness is that which the soul feels at ease with and the heart feels tranquil about. And sin is that which wavers in your soul and causes uneasiness in your chest, even if people give you legal opinions and give you more opinions (in its favor)."
I am the One Who is most free from want of partners. So, he who does something for the sake of someone else beside Me, I discard him and his polytheism.'
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty said: 'I am the One Who is most free from want of partners. So, he who does something for the sake of someone else beside Me, I discard him and his polytheism.'"
When two Muslims meet to fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the killed are doomed to Hellfire
Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When two Muslims meet to fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the killed are doomed to Hellfire." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, that is the case with the killer, but what about the killed one?" He said: "Indeed, he was keen to kill his companion."
Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance and wealth, but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance and wealth, but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”
Verily, the reward of deeds depends on the intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what he intended
‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, the reward of deeds depends on the intention, and a person will be rewarded according to what he intended. So, he whose migration is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, then his migration is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and he whose migration is to achieve some worldly gain or take some woman in marriage, then his migration is for what he migrated for." In a version by Al-Bukhāri: "Verily, the reward of deeds depends on the intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what he intended."
None of you truly believes until I become dearer to him than his father, his children, and all people
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you truly believes until I become dearer to him than his father, his children, and all people."
Whoever is attached to something will be entrusted to that thing
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Akīm (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is attached to something will be entrusted to that thing."
A man asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "When is the Hour?" He said: "What have you prepared for it?
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "When is the Hour?" He said: "What have you prepared for it?" He said: "Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "You will be with whom you love." Anas said: We did not feel more joyful than we did due to the Prophet's statement: "You will be with whom you love." Anas said: I love the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, and I hope I will be with them by virtue of my love for them, even if I did not perform deeds like their deeds.
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would often say: "O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would often say: "O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have believed in you and what you have come with. Do you fear for us?" He said: "Yes! Indeed, the hearts are between two of the Fingers of Allah and He turns them as He wishes."
Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will make him reach the status of martyrs even if he dies on his bed
Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will make him reach the status of martyrs even if he dies on his bed."
يدخل الجنة أقوام أفئدتهم مثل أفئدة الطير
عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه مرفوعاً: «يَدخُلُ الجّنَّة أَقْوَام أَفئِدَتُهُم مِثل أًفئِدَة الطَّير».
Shall I tell you what I fear more for you than the Antichrist? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Hidden polytheism; when a man gets up to pray and improves his prayer because he sees another man watching him
Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I tell you what I fear more for you than the Antichrist?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Hidden polytheism; when a man gets up to pray and improves his prayer because he sees another man watching him."
There is no contagion, nor is there any evil omen in birds, nor is there any evil omen in the owl, nor is there any evil omen in Safar, and run away from the leper as you would run away from the lion
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no contagion, nor is there any evil omen in birds, nor is there any evil omen in the owl, nor is there any evil omen in Safar, and run away from the leper as you would run away from the lion."
Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire: an eye which has wept out of fear of Allah, and an eye which has spent the night guarding in the cause of Allah
Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire: an eye which has wept out of fear of Allah, and an eye which has spent the night guarding in the cause of Allah."
Let none of you die except while having good expectations of Allah
Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) three days before his death saying: "Let none of you die except while having good expectations of Allah."
Righteousness is good morals, and sinfulness is what your heart is not at ease with, and you hate that people know about it
An-Nawwās ibn Sim‘ān al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about righteousness and sinfulness, and he said, "Righteousness is good morals, and sinfulness is what your heart is not at ease with, and you hate that people know about it."
The one who is afraid (of the pillage of the enemy) sets out in the early part of the night, and the one who sets out early will reach his destination. Verily, the commodity of Allah is precious. Verily, the commodity of Allah is Paradise
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who is afraid (of the pillage of the enemy) sets out in the early part of the night, and the one who sets out early will reach his destination. Verily, the commodity of Allah is precious. Verily, the commodity of Allah is Paradise."
The strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both. Adhere to whatever brings you benefit, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If something befalls you, do not say: 'Had I done such-and-such, it would have been such-and-such;' rather, say: 'Allah has decreed, and whatever He wills, He does.' Indeed, 'if' opens the way before the devil to act."
Allah has given a parable: a straight path
An-Nawwās ibn Sam‘ān al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given a parable: a straight path that is surrounded by two walls on both sides, with several open doors within the walls covered with curtains. There is a caller on the gate of the path who says: 'O people, enter the path, all of you, and do not deviate from it.' Meanwhile, a caller from above the path is also warning any person who wants to open any of these doors: 'Woe unto you! Do not open it, for if you open it, you will pass through.' The path is Islam, the two walls are the limits set by Allah, and the open doors are Allah's prohibitions. The caller on the gate of the path is the Book of Allah, while the caller above the path is Allah's admonishment in the heart of every Muslim."
إذا قضى أحدكم الصلاة في مسجده فليجعل لبيته نصيبًا من صلاته
عن جابر قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «إذا قضى أحدكم الصلاة في مسجده فليجعل لبيته نصيبًا من صلاته، فإن الله جاعلٌ في بيته من صلاته خيرًا».
I am a messenger from Allah to you to tell you that Allah loves you as you love him for His sake
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man set out to visit a brother (in faith) in another town, so Allah sent an angel to wait for him on his way. When he met the angel, the latter said: 'Where are you going?' He said: 'I am going to visit my brother in this town.' The angel said: 'Are you returning a favor?' He said: 'No, only that I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted.' Thereupon the angel said: 'I am a messenger from Allah to you to tell you that Allah loves you as you love him for His sake.'"
In Madīnah, there are people who are with you whenever you cover a distance or cross a valley. They have been detained by illness
Abu ‘Abdullāh Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on an expedition, and he said: "In Madīnah, there are people who are with you whenever you cover a distance or cross a valley. They have been detained by illness.'' Another narration reads: ''They have shared the reward with you." Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ''When we returned from the battle of Tabūk with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) he said: 'There are people whom we left behind in Madīnah who accompany us in spirit in every pass and valley we cross. They have been detained by a valid excuse.'''
And verily, Allah revealed to me that you must be humble, so that no one boasts of oneself before another or oppresses another
‘Iyād ibn Himār, the brother of Bani Mujāshi‘ (may Allah be pleased with him), reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us one day and delivered a sermon, in which he said: and then he narrated the Hadīth that includes: "And verily, Allah revealed to me that you must be humble, so that no one boasts of oneself before another or oppresses another."
إذا سرتك حسنتك وساءتك سيئتك فأنت مؤمن
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ قَالَ: «إِذَا سَرَّتْكَ حَسَنَتُكَ وَسَاءَتْكَ سَيِّئَتُكَ فَأَنْتَ مُؤْمِنٌ» فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الْإِثْمُ؟ قَالَ: «إِذَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ شَيْءٌ فَدَعْهُ».
إن الشيطان قعد لابن آدم بأطرقه
عَنْ سَبْرَةَ بْنِ أَبِي فَاكِهٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: "إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ قَعَدَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ بِأَطْرُقِهِ، فَقَعَدَ لَهُ بِطَرِيقِ الْإِسْلَامِ، فَقَالَ: تُسْلِمُ وَتَذَرُ دِينَكَ وَدِينَ آبَائِكَ وَآبَاءِ أَبِيكَ، فَعَصَاهُ فَأَسْلَمَ، ثُمَّ قَعَدَ لَهُ بِطَرِيقِ الْهِجْرَةِ، فَقَالَ: تُهَاجِرُ وَتَدَعُ أَرْضَكَ وَسَمَاءَكَ، وَإِنَّمَا مَثَلُ الْمُهَاجِرِ كَمَثَلِ الْفَرَسِ فِي الطِّوَلِ، فَعَصَاهُ فَهَاجَرَ، ثُمَّ قَعَدَ لَهُ بِطَرِيقِ الْجِهَادِ، فَقَالَ: تُجَاهِدُ فَهُوَ جَهْدُ النَّفْسِ وَالْمَالِ، فَتُقَاتِلُ فَتُقْتَلُ، فَتُنْكَحُ الْمَرْأَةُ، وَيُقْسَمُ الْمَالُ، فَعَصَاهُ فَجَاهَدَ" فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ قُتِلَ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَإِنْ غَرِقَ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ، أَوْ وَقَصَتْهُ دَابَّتُهُ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ».
حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل قالها إبراهيم عليه السلام حين أُلقي في النار، وقالها محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم
عن ابن عباس حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل: «قالها إبراهيم عليه السلام حين أُلقي في النار، وقالها محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم حين قالوا: {إن الناس قد جمعوا لكم فاخشوهم فزادهم إيمانا، وقالوا: حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل} [آل عمران: 173]».
Indeed, a servant may pray a prayer, but nothing of it is recorded for him except a tenth of it, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth, or a quarter, or a third, or a half
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Anamah reported: I saw ‘Ammār ibn Yāsir enter the mosque and perform the prayer, and he performed it briefly. When he came out, I went to him and said: O Abu al-Yaqzhān, you performed the prayer briefly. He replied: Did you see me leave out any of its required parts or limits? I said: No. He said: Verily, I hastened in it to ward off the distraction of the devil. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Indeed, a servant may pray a prayer, but nothing of it is recorded for him except a tenth of it, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth, or a quarter, or a third, or a half."
يا رسول الله هو صدقة لله فضعه حيث شئت
عن عبد الله بن أبي بكر أن أبا طلحة الأنصاري كان يصلي في حائطه فطار دُبْسِيٌّ، فطَفِق يتردَّد يلتمس مخرجًا، فأعجبه ذلك، فجعل يُتبِعُه بصرَه ساعةً، ثم رجع إلى صلاته، فإذا هو لا يدري كم صلى. فقال: لقد أصابتني في مالي هذا فتنة. فجاء إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فذكر له الذي أصابه في حائطه من الفتنة، وقال: يا رسول الله هو صدقة لله فضعه حيث شئت.
No Muslim is afflicted with a calamity and then says what Allah has commanded: {We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return} [Surat al-Baqarah: 156], O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better, except that Allah replaces it for him with something better
’Umm Salamah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "No Muslim is afflicted with a calamity and then says what Allah has commanded: {We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return} [Surat al-Baqarah: 156], O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better, except that Allah replaces it for him with something better." She said: When Abu Salamah passed away, I said: Who among the Muslims could be better than Abu Salamah, the first household to migrate to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)? Then I said it, and Allah replaced him for me with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
وسلوا الله المعافاة، فإنه لم يؤت أحد بعد اليقين خيرًا من المعافاة
عَنْ أَوْسَطَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبَجَلِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ حِينَ قُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا عَامَ الْأَوَّلِ، ثُمَّ بَكَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ، فَإِنَّهُ مَعَ الْبِرِّ وَهُمَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ، فَإِنَّهُ مَعَ الْفُجُورِ وَهُمَا فِي النَّارِ، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ الْمُعَافَاةَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يُؤْتَ أَحَدٌ بَعْدَ الْيَقِينِ خَيْرًا مِنَ الْمُعَافَاةِ، وَلَا تَحَاسَدُوا، وَلَا تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلَا تَقَاطَعُوا، وَلَا تَدَابَرُوا، وَكُونُوا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ إِخْوَانًا».
Shall I not tell you of something better in degree than fasting, prayer, and charity?
Abu ad-Dardā’ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Shall I not tell you of something better in degree than fasting, prayer, and charity?" They said: Yes. He said: "Reconciling between people, for discord among them is the shaver."
By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give
‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: An amount of money, or some war captives, were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he distributed, giving some men and leaving others. He was then informed that the ones he had not given anything expressed their frustration by this. Upon that, he praised Allah, extolled him, and then said: "By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give. However, I give to those whom I see in their hearts fear and anxiety, and as for the ones whom I do not give anything, I leave them to the richness and good that Allah has put in their hearts. One of them is ‘Amr ibn Taghlib." ‘Amr ibn Taghlib said: "By Allah, I would not exchange those words that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said (about me) for the most precious red camels."
People are precious metals, like the metals gold and silver. The best of them in the pre-Islamic period are the best of them in Islam, if they understand. Souls are conscripted soldiers, whichever of them come together, they unite and whichever of them disregard each other, they diverge
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are precious metals, like the metals gold and silver. The best of them in the pre-Islamic period are the best of them in Islam, if they understand. Souls are conscripted soldiers, whichever of them come together, they unite and whichever of them disregard each other, they diverge." Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''You find people like metal; the best of them in the pre-Islamic era are the best of them in Islam, if they understand. And you find the best of people in this matter are those who detest it most. And you find the most evil of people are the two-faced; the ones who come to these with one face and to those with another.''
كيف أنعم وصاحب القرن قد الْتَقَم القرن
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: كَيْفَ أَنْعَمُ وَصَاحِبُ القَرْنِ قَدِ التَقَمَ القَرْنَ وَاسْتَمَعَ الإِذْنَ مَتَى يُؤْمَرُ بِالنَّفْخِ فَيَنْفُخُ فَكَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ ثَقُلَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: قُولُوا: حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الوَكِيلُ، عَلَى اللهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا.
