Manners of Dressing

Do not wear silk or brocade, and do not drink from gold or silver vessels, and do not eat in platters made therefrom, for they are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter
‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn Abi Layla reported that they were in the company of Hudhayfah, who asked for water, and a Magian brought him water. On placing the cup in his hand, he threw it at him and said, Had I not forbidden him more than once or twice—as if he were saying, I would not have done this—however, I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Do not wear silk or brocade, and do not drink from gold or silver vessels, and do not eat in platters made therefrom, for they are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter."
Whoever wears silk in the life of this world will not wear it in the Hereafter
‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wears silk in the life of this world will not wear it in the Hereafter."
When you put on clothes and when you perform ablution, you should begin with your right side
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you put on clothes and when you perform ablution, you should begin with your right side."
When any of you is putting on his shoes, let him start with the right foot; and when he is taking them off, let him start with the left foot. Let the right foot be the first when putting on the shoes and the last when taking them off
‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of you is putting on his shoes, let him start with the right foot; and when he is taking them off, let him start with the left foot. Let the right foot be the first when putting on the shoes and the last when taking them off."
None of you should walk wearing one shoe; either wear both of them or take them both off
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should walk wearing just one shoe; either wear both of them or take them both off."
A man must not look at another man's ‘Awrah (must-cover body part), nor must a woman look at another woman's ‘Awrah
Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man must not look at another man's ‘Awrah (must-cover body part), nor must a woman look at another woman's ‘Awrah; neither should two men lie undressed under one attire, nor should two women lie undressed under one attire."
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) had a gold ring made for himself
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) had a gold ring made for himself, and whenever he wore it, he used to keep the stone toward the palm of his hand. Consequently, the people made the same thing. Afterward, he sat on the pulpit and took it off, saying: "I used to wear this ring and keep its stone toward the palm of my hand." He then threw it away and said: "By Allah! I will never wear it." Thereupon, all the people threw away their rings. In another narration: "He wore it in his right hand.”
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk except for the width of two, three, or four fingers.
‘Umar ibn Al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk except for this much, and he raised his index and middle fingers to us. A narration by Muslim reads: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk except for the width of two, three, or four fingers.”
Whoever gives up wearing elegant expensive clothes out of humbleness with Allah, while he can afford it, Allah will call him on the Day of Judgment before all people and let him choose whichever of the garments of faith he would like to wear
Mu‘ādh ibn Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives up wearing elegant expensive clothes out of humbleness with Allah, while he can afford it, Allah will call him on the Day of Judgment before all people and let him choose whichever of the garments of faith he would like to wear."
I passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and my lower garment was trailing. Therefore, he said: O ‘Abdullāh, pull up your lower garment. I raised it and he said: Up! So I raised it further, and I have been doing so since then. Some people said: Up to where? He said: To the middle of the shins
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and my lower garment was trailing. Therefore, he said: "O ‘Abdullāh, pull up your lower garment." I raised it and he said: 'Up!’ So I raised it further, and I have been doing so since then. Some people said: "Up to where?" He said: "To the middle of the shins."
While a man was walking, dressed in fine clothes and admiring himself, with his hair well-combed
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "While a man was walking, dressed in fine clothes and admiring himself, with his hair well-combed and he was walking haughtily, suddenly Allah caused the earth to swallow him, and he continues to sink therein until the Day of Judgment.”
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a man wears his shoes while standing
Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a man wears his shoes while standing.
Wear white clothes, for they are among the best of your clothes; and shroud your deceased in them
Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wear white clothes, for they are among the best of your clothes; and shroud your deceased in them."
أبلي وأخلِفي، ثم أبلي وأخلِفي، ثم أبلي وأخلِفي
عَنْ أُمِّ خَالِدٍ بِنْتِ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَتْ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ أَبِي وَعَلَيَّ قَمِيصٌ أَصْفَرُ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «سَنَهْ سَنَهْ» -قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: وَهِيَ بِالحَبَشِيَّةِ حَسَنَةٌ-، قَالَتْ: فَذَهَبْتُ أَلْعَبُ بِخَاتَمِ النُّبُوَّةِ، فَزَبَرَنِي أَبِي، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «دَعْهَا»، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَبْلِي وَأَخْلِفِي ثُمَّ أَبْلِي وَأَخْلِفِي ثُمَّ أَبْلِي وَأَخْلِفِي» قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: فَبَقِيَتْ حَتَّى ذَكَرَ.
إن الله يحب أن يرى أثر نعمته على عبده
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبَّ أَنْ يَرَى أَثَرَ نِعْمَتِهِ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ».
كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا لبس قميصًا بدأ بميامنه
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا لَبِسَ قَمِيصًا بَدَأَ بِمَيَامِنِهِ.
إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان ينهانا عن كثيرٍ من الإرفَاهِ
عَنْ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَحَلَ إِلَى فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ وَهُوَ بِمِصْرَ، فَقَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ آتِكَ زَائِرًا، وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ حَدِيثًا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجَوْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عِنْدَكَ مِنْهُ عِلْمٌ، قَالَ: وَمَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ: كَذَا وَكَذَا، قَالَ: فَمَا لِي أَرَاكَ شَعِثًا وَأَنْتَ أَمِيرُ الْأَرْضِ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَنْهَانَا عَنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنَ الإِرْفَاهِ، قَالَ: فَمَا لِي لَا أَرَى عَلَيْكَ حِذَاءً؟ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَحْتَفِيَ أَحْيَانًا.
أأمك أمرتك بهذا؟
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: رَأَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ ثَوْبَيْنِ مُعَصْفَرَيْنِ، فَقَالَ: «أَأُمُّكَ أَمَرَتْكَ بِهَذَا؟» قُلْتُ: أَغْسِلُهُمَا؟ قَالَ: «بَلْ أَحْرِقْهُمَا».
أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لبس خاتم فضة في يمينه
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَبِسَ خَاتَمَ فِضَّةٍ فِي يَمِينِهِ، فِيهِ فَصٌّ حَبَشِيٌّ، كَانَ يَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي كَفَّهُ.
The Muslim's lower garment should be halfway down the leg. There is no harm - or there is no blame - between that and the ankles. However, what is below the ankles is in the Fire. Whoever trails his lower garment out of vanity, Allah will not look at him
Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Muslim's lower garment should be halfway down the leg. Allah does not look at the one who drags his garment out of conceit
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah does not look at the one who drags his garment out of conceit."
