“There are four (traits); whoever has them is a sheer hypocrite, and whoever has one trait of them has one of the traits of hypocrisy until he gives it up: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is in a dispute, he behaves in a shameless immoral manner
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are four things; whoever has them is a hypocrite, and if one has a trait of them, he has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he quarrels, he acts immorally; and when he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous."
The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers. If they were to know the virtue of them, they would come to them, even if they had to crawl
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers. If they were to know the virtue of them, they would come to them, even if they had to crawl. I have almost intended to order for the prayer to be established, and appoint a man to lead the people in prayer, and then I would go along with some men having bundles of firewood, to the people who are not attending the prayer and burn their houses upon them with fire."
Our Lord will reveal His Shin, and then all believers, men and women, will prostrate themselves before Him, but there will remain those who used to prostrate in the worldly life for showing off and gaining good reputation. Such people will try to prostrate (in that situation) but their backs will be as stiff as if it is one bone
Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Our Lord will reveal His Shin, and then all believers, men and women, will prostrate themselves before Him, but there will remain those who used to prostrate in the worldly life for showing off and gaining good reputation. Such people will try to prostrate (in that situation) but their backs will be as stiff as if it is one bone (a single vertebra)."
The hypocrite is like a ewe which goes to and fro between two flocks: going once to one and another time to the other
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hypocrite is like a ewe which goes to and fro between two flocks: going once to one and another time to the other."

When the verse of charity was revealed, we would carry loads on our backs. A man came and gave so much in charity, so they said: He is showing off. Another man came and gave a Sā‘ in charity, so they said: Allah is no need for the Sā‘ of that one. Then it was revealed: {Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort}
Abu Mas‘ūd ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr al-Ansāri al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: 'When the verse of charity was revealed, we would carry loads on our backs (in return for money that we can give for charity). A man came and gave so much in charity, so they said: ‘He is showing off.’ Another man came and gave a Sā‘ in charity, so they said: ‘Allah is no need for the Sā‘ of that one.’ Then it was revealed: {Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort.} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 79]
When we enter upon our rulers, we say to them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. He said: We used to consider this hypocrisy during the Prophet's lifetime
Muhammad ibn Zayd reported that some people said to his grandfather ‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them): When we enter upon our rulers, we say to them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. He said: "We used to consider this hypocrisy during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)."
آية المنافق ثلاث
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: "آيَةُ المُنَافِقِ ثَلاَثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ".
أخوف ما أخاف عليكم جدال المنافق
عن عمران بن حصين، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أخوف ما أخاف عليكم جدال المنافق عليم اللسان».
أن رجالا من المنافقين على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الغزو تخلفوا عنه
عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه: «أن رجالًا من المنافقين على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الغزو تخلفوا عنه، وفرحوا بمقعدهم خلاف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فإذا قدم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اعتذروا إليه، وحلفوا وأحبوا أن يحمدوا بما لم يفعلوا، فنزلت: (لا يحسبن الذين يفرحون بما أتوا ويحبون أن يحمدوا بما لم يفعلوا) الآية».
إنما خيرني الله فقال: {استغفر لهم أو لا تستغفر لهم إن تستغفر لهم سبعين مرة} وسأزيده على السبعين
عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال: لما توفي عبد الله بن أُبيّ جاء ابنه عبد الله بن عبد الله إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فسأله أن يعطيه قميصه يكفِّن فيه أباه، فأعطاه، ثم سأله أن يصلي عليه، فقام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليصلي عليه، فقام عمر فأخذ بثوب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: يا رسول الله تصلي عليه، وقد نهاك ربك أن تصلي عليه؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إنما خيرني الله فقال: {استغفر لهم أو لا تستغفر لهم إن تستغفر لهم سبعين مرة} [التوبة: 80]، وسأزيده على السبعين" قال: إنه منافق. قال: فصلى عليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأنزل الله: {ولا تصل على أحد منهم مات أبدًا ولا تقم على قبره} [التوبة: 84].
من صلى لله أربعين يومًا في جماعة يدرك التكبيرة الأولى كتب له براءتان
عن أنس بن مالك قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (من صلى لله أربعين يومًا في جماعة يدرك التكبيرة الأولى كتب له براءتان: براءة من النار، وبراءة من النفاق).
آية الإيمان حب الأنصار، وآية النفاق بُغْضُ الأنصار
عن أنس عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «آية الإيمان حب الأنصار، وآية النفاق بُغْضُ الأنصار».
إن المنافقين اليومَ شرٌّ منهم على عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، كانوا يومئذ يسرون واليوم يجهرون
عن حذيفة بن اليمان قال: إن المنافقين اليومَ شرٌّ منهم على عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، كانوا يومئذٍ يُسِرُّون واليومَ يَجهرون.
We set out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his travels, and on the way the provisions became very scarce
Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his travels, and on the way the provisions became very scarce. ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy said: "Do not spend on those with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) until they disband." He also said: "If we return to Madīnah, surely the more honorable will expel therefrom the more humble." I went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of what he had said. So he sent for ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy, who denied it and swore that he did not say that. The people started saying: "Zayd lied to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." I was hurt by what they said: until Allah, the Almighty, revealed that I had told the truth in the verses: {If the hypocrites come to you...} [Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn] Later, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) invited them (the hypocrites) to ask for forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads aside (in rejection)."
I do not think that so-and-so and so-and-so know anything about our religion
‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not think that so-and-so and so-and-so know anything about our religion." Al-Layth ibn Sa‘d (one of the narrators of the Hadīth) said: "These two men were from the hypocrites."
The majority of the hypocrites of this Ummah are its reciters
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The majority of the hypocrites of this Ummah are its reciters."
